Would you like to always look polished and well put together with minimal effort no matter what the occasion?
Do you find yourself looking into a sea of clothes in your closet yet finding nothing to wear?
Are you spending money on clothes that just don’t work with anything else in your wardrobe?
If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, then let me introduce you to the capsule wardrobe approach to dressing...
What is a capsule wardrobe?
It’s a collection of essential items of clothing that form the basis of your wardrobe and can be worn for multiple seasons. The aim is to build a foundation and then build upon it with seasonal or ‘occasion specific’ pieces without having to buy many new items. The term has been popularized by the fashion industry and with TV shows such as the iconic show What Not To Wear (my personal favourite!) and fashion magazines such as Marie Claire and Elle running features.
A well designed capsule wardrobe will essentially:
Make it easier for you to create outfits that look ‘pulled together...thus simplifying your life!
Help you get more wear out of the pieces you have
Save money over the longer term!!!
Over the next four posts, I will show you how to build a capsule wardrobe that consists of approximately 30 pieces and will last you for a season.
There are four steps to building the perfect capsule collection:
Do a self assessment
Conduct a wardrobe audit
Create a shopping plan
So let’s get started!
Step 1. Self assessment:
Think about your lifestyle by asking yourself the following questions. You may want to keep a log over a two-week period.
How do you spend your time over a typical week?
What activities and events do you engage in?
What roles do you play? Think broadly here...business owner, wife, soccer mom, athlete, volunteer etc.
What are the dress code expectations?
What image do you want to portray to the world? Remember that people, at least initially, will form a perception of you based on how you present yourself on the outside.
Are there celebrities or public figures whose style you admire? Study how they dress, look at the details...do they have a signature look? what words come to mind that describe the way they dress?
Once you have answered these questions, you will have a better idea of how you spend your time and what roles you play in your life. This will help to shape an image of what your capsule wardrobe needs to include in order to help you look your best no matter what you are doing, where you going and who you are meeting.
Next time I will walk you through how to conduct a wardrobe audit. This will help you to sort through what you currently have in your closet and be the starting point of building your capsule wardrobe.
