'Tis the Season...for the End of Season Sale!

September 1, 2017

‘Tis the season...no, it isn’t Christmas yet! However it is the season for the end of season sales. As we hit the Labour Day long weekend, retailers are making a strong push to clear out their summer inventory with deep discounts to make room for fall and winter inventory.

What this means for savvy shoppers is that you are able to find really good deals on items that you can wear into the transition season (in-between summer and fall) and put away for next summer.

Just a couple of examples of the great sales going on in the city and online...

Nordstrom just began its summer clearance sale on a wide variety of items across the store including designers like Burberry, Rag & Bone, Alice & Olivia, Boss, Frame, Equipment and more. The sale ends on September 10th. This deal loving fashionista snagged a winter white Rag & Bone Redgrave blazer (pictured below) for almost 70% off the full price! #loveadeal Needless to say, I will be wearing this piece with a black turtleneck and jeans well into the fall and winter.

Intermix, the upscale, stylish NYC retailer is offering an additional 40% off it’s sale merchandise. A great time to find the perfect outfit for the festivities about to descend upon the GTA in the coming weeks like the Toronto Fashion Week and the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The Novella Maria Mini Dress in red (pictured below) will have the papparazzi snapping your pictures for sure!

Other retailers such as Aritzia are sweetening the pot by offering free shipping this long weekend...so no minimum spends required! J. Crew is offering 30% off full-priced merchandise and an additional 30% off sale items. Michael Kors is offering an additional 25% off sale merchandise. And the list goes on... Be sure to check with your favourite retailer to see if they are offering special promotions.

We’ve all been caught up in the excitement of a sale and then getting home and having buyer’s remorse. So a couple of things to keep in mind, when you are out there scouring the racks or browsing sales online:

  • The golden rule: don’t purchase anything that you wouldn’t have purchased at full price. Just because the designer fuchsia coloured trousers are 80% off, you don’t want to spend the money and then have them hanging in your closet unworn

  • Look for classic styles that you will be able to wear in the coming season and that will carry you through to next summer at least. I had been coveting a pinstripe shirt dress and was thrilled to find one at Michael Kors (pictured below) at 70% off. I know I’ll be wearing it with a leather jacket and booties over the coming weeks.

  • This is the time to stock up on items that you like in other colours. Case in point, I purchased a one shoulder Taddeo tank top (shown below) at Aritzia in the summer at full price. It is now on sale in other colours. I know I like the style and that it I will be able to wear it into the fall with a kimono topper and also again next summer.

  • Pick up a novelty item that has been discounted. If you fell in love with one of the fashion trends this summer such as the cold shoulder tops (BP Twist front cold shoulder Tee shown below) and dresses, but didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a trend that may not have longevity, now’s the time to pick up a fun piece. The weather is still warm enough for you to buy-now wear-now. If you choose wisely, you may be able to wear the piece again next spring and summer.

The temperature may be dropping, but so are the prices! Happy shopping!
