The Journey ZOFF Gala 2018
ZOFF FW 2018 Collection
February 5, 2018
As I entered the Four Seasons in Yorkville on a recent cold wintery evening in February, I was struck by the twinkling of lights on the majestic moose on display on the snow laden lawn. The image of a winter wonderland came to mind. This evening, I was going to be meeting with Michael Zoffranieri, designer and wunderkind behind the ZOFF brand, as part of the Bloor-Yorkville Toronto Fashion Week Fall Winter 2018 (FW18).
An air of anticipation filled me as I made my way up to the elegantly appointed room for the private salon style viewing. Having seen Zoffranieri’s Spring Summer 2018 (SS2018) collection at Toronto Women’s Fashion week last Fall, I knew that I was in for a treat!
Upon entering the suite, I was warmly welcomed by a member of the Zoff team and offered a glass of sparkling wine and an assortment of delicious bites. Zoffranieri himself, who has recently nominated for the Canadian Arts and Fashion Awards (CAFA) Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent, Fashion, was the epitome of graciousness and humility. We made ourselves comfortable in the living room area of the suite and started our interview...which was really like an intimate chat with a dear friend.
He shared that inspiration behind this collection is his Nonna (grandmother). As a young woman, she left the family home in Italy and came to Canada. The collection, known as The Journey, represents her fearlessness and strength, and her willingness to ‘get her hands dirty’ along her journey to her new life on a new continent.
The pieces themselves were a feast both for the eyes and to the touch. Fabrics ranged from French laces and organza to sumptuous velvets and glittering sequins. The designer’s vision of ‘Art is Movement’ came to life in an amethyst ‘oil look’ sequinned gown that was as light as air and bolero style jacket, with brooch detail worn over a black French lace leotard and French lace and organza lined midi-skirt. Each piece is a work of art and yet wearable in everyday life.
A couple of pieces stood out as perfect options for the avant-garde bride. One, a stunningly simple French ivory lace with black accents (a big bridal trend this year). The second, an ivory silk wool bustier with built in skirt worn with matching high waisted, slim fit trousers.
According to Zoffranieri, the Zoff woman is fearless in her approach to self love. She dresses to pamper herself first. She is courageous, intelligent and witty. Wouldn’t we all love a little Zoff sparkle in our lives?
