Metamorphosis…a change of the form or nature of a thing or person into a completely different one, by natural or supernatural means.
As Rubem Robierb, the artist behind the Metamorphosis exhibit conveys, the collection is about the juxtaposition of opposing ideas to create something new and beautiful. The theme is evident in the exhibit, currently on display at the Taglialatella Galleries in Yorkville, Toronto.
The butterfly, a symbol of transformation and a signature motif in Robierb’s work, has been ingeniously crafted to represent both strength and fragility. In his “Diptychs” series, an evolution from his ‘Bullet-Fly’” series, one sees the beauty of the fragile butterfly wings stand in perfect contrast to the sculpted bullets that are placed in between the wings.
The bullets themselves have been sculpted in aluminum and then dipped in gold, copper and silver chrome and adorned with Swarovski crystals, almost looking like luxurious tubes of lipstick. With the words “Love” and “Love Changes Everything” scrawled across them, they adroitly convey the message love, not war, is the most powerful force in the world.
Another rendition of the butterfly motif occurs in the “Dream Machine” sculptural series. This series invites engagement with the art, as the beholder is able to become one with the art by positioning themselves between the wings.
The innocence of the “Power Flowers” collection appears almost at odds with the rest of Robierb’s body of work until one comes closer and realizes that the flower is not what it seems. The bloom is in fact an exploded bullet. Robierb’s art continuously challenges its viewer to look beyond the obvious to the hidden meaning within.
A fourth theme represented in the exhibit is the “Heart” series. The heart is a seemingly simple and commonly used symbol yet conveys such complex, profound and powerful emotions. The series flirts with these two ideas in a playful way.
Finally, the “Money Talks” series depicts the value that society places on status and wealth. The subtext being that wealth is equivalent to worth.
Tucked in a cozy corner of Yorkville Avenue next to Sofia Restaurant and bar, the launch event was exciting, hip and chic. Guests had the opportunity to meet the charming yet unassuming artist while sipping on wine. The soiree also extended onto the patio of the Sofia Restaurant where signature cocktails and appertizers were being served.
The month long Metamorphosis exhibit is currently on display at the Taglialatella Galleries in Yorkville, (Toronto), Paris, Palm Springs and New York. For more information, please visit www.taglialatellagalleries.com
